Installing InstaColl
I downloaded InstaColl but am unable to install it.
If you are unable to install InstaColl, please check if your system meets the stated requirements:
System Requirements
Please ensure that:
- You have a Windows PC (Windows 2000 or later)
- You have Internet Explorer 5.0 or later designated as your default browser.
- You click "OK" on the pop-up that appears asking permission for approving the ActiveX to run.
Check if your system meets the requirements for InstaColl here.

I downloaded InstaColl but in the installation cycle, it is repeatedly asking me to close all running Microsoft Office applications and retry.
InstaColl installs an embedded button into your Microsoft applications to enable you to kick off sessions from right within these applications. To be able to install these buttons, you need to close your running Microsoft Office applications during installation.
If you cannot see any running Microsoft Office applications but still keep getting a prompt to close your Microsoft Office applications, try the following:
- Close Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express (especially if you have selected Microsoft Word as your default editor within these applications).
- Check for any Word, Excel or PowerPoint applications instances that are running in the background and terminate them. To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard, click on "Task Manager", select the "Processes" tab and look for any instances of Word(WORD.EXE), Excel(EXCEL.EXE) or Power Point (POWERPOINT.EXE) and click on "End Process".
back to top Logging in to InstaColl
I am a registered user but am not able to log into InstaColl.
Check for the following:
- Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
- Make sure that your user ID (your e-mail address) and your password is correct. If you have any doubts, click on "Forgot Password" and have your password mailed to your account.
back to top Joining a session
I received an InstaColl invitation from a friend with a link to join a session but am unable to join it. If you are unable to join a session, please check for the following:
System Requirements
Please ensure that:
- You have a Windows PC (Windows 2000 or later)
- You have Internet Explorer 5.0 or later designated as your default browser.
- You are connected to the Internet
- You click "OK" on the pop-up that appears asking permission for approving the ActiveX to run.
Check if your system meets the requirements for InstaColl here.
If your system meets the stated requirements, InstaColl should be downloaded and installed on your system on clicking on the invitation link. back to top
I have successfully installed InstaColl but am unable to join a session that I have been invited to. If you have installed InstaColl and are unable to join a session that you were invited to, try the following:
- Ensure that you are connected to the Internet
- Try clicking on the email invitation link again
- Ensure that you have entered the correct passkey for the session that you have been invited to.
Also, the free version of InstaColl allows only two concurrent users within a single session. So if the user who created the session has invited multiple people to a single session, only the first invitee who logs in can enter the session. The session is locked out for any subsequent invitees who try to enter a session. If you get a message to this effect, check with the person who invited you as to whether he has invited multiple people.

I have successfully installed InstaColl starting from an invitation link but on launching InstaColl, I am getting an IM-like login window.
This happens if you have manually downloaded the set up file and installed InstaColl rather than through the automatic ActiveX control. Close the login window that comes up and simply click on the e-mail invitation link again and enter your credentials in the browser page that comes up (NB: You need to do this through Internet Explorer - if IE is not your default browser, please copy the URL and paste it into a IE window manually). This should enable you to join the session that you have been invited to..
back to top Context of shared document
I created an InstaColl session from within a selected document in Word /Excel /Power Point and invited a friend. But when my friend logged into the session, the document is not appearing automatically.
This could happen if you logged into the session and logged out before your friend joins the session. When you do so and try to rejoin the session at a later time, the context to a specific document is lost. You need to be online and connected to the session for your document to be shared with your friend. Now, you can log in again, select the document from within InstaColl and load it to share it with your friend.

Using InstaColl
I am in an InstaColl session but am not able to share a Word/Excel/PowerPoint document.
This could happen if the person with whom you are collaborating does not have any of these Microsoft Office applications installed on her system. Right-click on the person's name in the participant's panel and select "System Info" to check if this is indeed the case. Even if the invited participant does not have Microsoft Office, you can share documents and other content with her using the "Share your Screen" module - where you can display your entire desktop to your colleague - we recommend that you use this only as a last resort.

I am in an InstaColl session but am not make any changes to a shared document.
Only the person who has control of the session can make changes to a shared document at any point of time - you can see who has control in the conference participants panel. If you would like to make changes to a document, you can request the moderator to give you control by clicking on the "yellow bulb" button on the control panel.
